First Jet fuel train loaded at Vopak's oil terminal in Gävle

|
On 4th October the first train was loaded with Jet A1 at Vopak's oil terminal in Gävle with destination Stockholm Arlanda Airport. The official launch of the JetA1-terminal was held on 31st October together with port of Gävle and other stakeholders to the project. Vopak has a long-term contract with a consortium of major Jet A1 suppliers for the storage and logistics handling of Jet A1 at Vopak's oil terminal in Gävle. The Jet A1 will be delivered by vessel to Vopak’s terminal and then loaded on railcar for transportation to Stockholm Arlanda Airport. A train set contains of 17 rail wagons carrying 80 cbm jet fuels each. Approximately 10 trains will be shipped every week.
Arlanda is Stockholm’s main airport; Vopak Terminal Gävle is located 130 km north of Stockholm. This new location for Jet A1 storage has long been the goal of the community of Stockholm to end the tank truck transportation of jetfuel from the Loudden oil port, in the midst of Stockholm city, to the Stockholm Arlanda Airport.
To accommodate the Jet A1 Vopak invested in converting 108.000 cbm tankage to dedicated jetfuel tankage. The engineering for this conversion was done in close cooperation with the customers. Conversion started end of Q1 2006 and tanks are now commercially operational for Jet A1.
Feiko Jager, Managing Director of the Vopak Terminals in Sweden: ‘The move of Jet A1 transportation from Loudden to Gavle will have a positive environmental and safety impact. Besides that it will contribute to activity in the Port of Gävle; the handling of vessels will increase considerable, and provide opportunities for port related services’.
